‘Putting Patients’ Needs First: Supporting better access and innovation for medicines for combating poverty-related diseases’
In a world where medical advances have produced substantial gains in life expectancy and quality of life for so many in rich countries, still one in three people around the world don’t have access to the medicines they need to fight poverty-related diseases. There is an urgent need to develop and support policies that will improve access to existing medicines and stimulate the research and development of better medical tools for people in poor countries suffering from poverty-related diseases. When diseases are fought wisely and widely, we can contain drug resistance, facilitate sustainable development, stimulate economic growth, ensure greater global public health security, and save human lives.
The Working Group on Innovation, Access to Medicines and Poverty Related Diseases, is being established to serve as a discussion forum with Members of the European Parliament, the European Commission and civil society so as to better integrate the European Union’s response on health related issues, specifically on HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria and other neglected diseases, as well as to ensure coherent policies on these topics.
The Working Group has the pleasure of inviting you to its inauguration.
On this occasion, the Chair of the Working Group, the MEP David Martin, Médecins Sans Frontières’ Access to Essential Medicines Campaign and Global Health Advocates will give presentations setting out the aims, activities and immediate challenges ahead for the Working Group.
