The Board of UNITAID agreed a memorandum of understanding with the recently established Medicines Patent Pool Foundation on June 8th, removing the final logistical hurdle and clearing the way for the Medicines Patent Pool Foundation to start work.

Medicines Patent Pool moves closer to launch
There’s very encouraging progress on the setting up of the Medicines Patent Pool following last week’s meeting of the UNITAID Finance and Administration Board. Finally, the budget for the Medicines Patent Pool Foundation has been approved and now plans are back on track for a July launch.

UNITAID Board still discussing finer details of the Patent Pool Entity
The Executive Board of UNITAID met for a Special Session on the Patent Pool to discuss aspects of establishing the legal entity and governance structure. Agreement was not reached at this meeting, but a resolution is expected soon. These issues must be settled so that the benefits of the proposed Patent Pool can be realised for patients living with HIV in all developing countries

The UNITAID Executive Board is meeting in Geneva, to make a decision on whether to fund and set up the licensing agency that would run the Patent Pool for HIV medicines. We’re spreading more widely now – the latest boost online came from people signing up in Brazil and we also have a ream of handwritten signatures from South Africa, being sent over from the MSF projects in Khayelitsha just outside Cape Town.
