Company: Boehringer Ingelheim
Headquarters: Ingelheim, Germany
These are the drug patents we want Boehringer Ingelheim to put in the pool and why patients need them:
Nevirapine (NVP)
Brand name: Viramune
This drug is used by people starting out on antiretroviral therapy. Like other HIV drugs, it is taken in combination with other drugs. Putting this drug in the pool will open the way to simplified treatment for patients by creating more easy to take, three-in-one combination tablets.
Tipranavir (TPV)
Brand name: Aptivus
Tipranavir is a drug that can be used to treat children who have grown resistant to their original antiretroviral treatment. There are a very limited number of drugs of this class (known as protease inhibitors or PIs) produced in child dosages that are available in developing countries and putting the patents for this drug in the pool could help to increase the treatment options for treating children with HIV over two years of age
