Tuberculosis

The Access Campaign is pushing for a TB point-of-care test that can accurately diagnose children and HIV co-infected patients while also working to improve access and treatment for MDR-TB.

Devindra Dercie is 11 years old and lives in Mumbai with his family. Despite many hospital visits, he wasn’t diagnosed with drug-resistant TB until two years after his first symptoms. Like most young children, he had difficulty producing the sputum required for testing and had to be induced with a gastric lavage – essentially a pipe slipped down his throat into his stomach – to extract a sample. He recovered from the diseases after 18 months of treatment.
